Carers make a huge difference to people's lives.

Jeremy 79, widower. Post operative hip replacement.

"I'm still pretty sharp. I just don't move as fast as I used to.

I'll admit that the house was becoming a bit of a burden over the last few years, but I was coping, or at least I was until I had my hip done. My son lives nearby and he and my daughter in-law try to help out but they have their own kids to take care of and besides I don't like constantly having to ask them for a hand.

We organised for Hilary, a carer, to come in to help; she now comes for one and a half days a week.

It's all the household things that you begin to let slip. You put it off for another week and soon you're snowed under. You never catch up. On Monday's, Hilary does all the cleaning up and my washing and ironing. Plus those little things. Last week I had two light bulbs go but I can't get up the ladder anymore; but Hilary can! She has also organised a gardener for me to keep the garden going while I'm laid up a bit.

Then on Thursday mornings she picks me up and we do all my shopping together before dropping me off at my club. Hilary has also arranged for a personal security system to be installed so that if I had a fall, I can easily call for help.

Now when the kids drop over we can chat, instead of them having to run around after me".
